> Advanced Behavioral Health Receives Prestigious SAMHSA Science and Service Award

SAMHSA created the Science and Service Awards as a national program to recognize community-based organizations and coalitions for exemplary implementation of evidence-based services. Earlier this year, Advanced Behavioral Health (ABH) was awarded the 2009 SAMHSA Science and Service Award for its work in the area of co-occurring disorders. ABH is a nonprofit behavioral health management company that specializes in utilization management, provider network administration, research and dissemination of best practices and health information technology.

Over the past 10 years, the Department of Children and Families (DCF) and the Court Support Services Division (CSSD) have increased funding for MST and the number of teams has grown from two to 28 in Connecticut. Since becoming the Connecticut MST Network Partner in 2004, ABH has provided all quality assurance measures and training and support for the DCF and CSSD MST teams from a local level. ABH established a monthly provider call, as well as an MST Workforce Development Committee in order to bring together providers and stakeholders to support the implementation of MST consistently and effectively across the state.

One of the primary goals of MST is to keep youth at home and out of residential placement. From 2004 to 2008, 3,649 youth were served by MST teams in Connecticut. Eighty-two percent of youth were living in the community at the time of discharge and only 14.9 percent of the youth discharged from MST were placed in a more restrictive setting. Additional goals of MST are to increase school attendance and to prevent future arrests. During the same period, 84 percent of youth discharged from MST were enrolled in school or working and 73 percent of the discharged youth had not been arrested during treatment.

MST welcomes it newest team member
Nancy Lyons joined MST Services this past summer. A native of North Carolina, she attended Appalachian State University where she received a bachelor of science degree in sociology. After college, her career path led her into the human resources field. Since then Nancy has gained experience in various positions from being a stay-at-home mom to an office manager of a marketing firm. She came to MST with some knowledge of the organization due to her previous work with Trio Solutions. Nancy spends her spare time with her husband and son and the family dog, Toby. When time allows she also enjoys reading fiction and exercising.
